Success Story of Gopamma

Empowered to face Life

Gopamma (45) W/O Prabhu is residing in Jainapur village of Bhalki Taluk. They have two girls and two boys. After her marriage she was initially well accepted by her in-laws. But her husband was a lazy man and the burden of the family was falling on to the other members of the joint family. It created resentment in the other members and they began to ill treat her. After a few years of marriage and the birth of four children, one fine day, they sent Gopamma and children out from the house. She was totally devastated not knowing what to do or where to go. She thought of committing suicide by jumping into a well. But the faces of her little children prevented her from it. She stayed in the common cemetery with her children.

Gopamma decided to face the hardships of life, to work hard and bring up her children. She began to work as a daily coolie worker in the agriculture fields.

Fr Francis who was the local centre Director introduced her to ORBIT and the possibilities of her family development through SHG. Since then she was unaware of SHG and its advantages. The members of the SHG welcomed her and explained to her about SHG. She joined the Akkamma Devi Self help group. The members of the SHG got good training and awareness programs through Women Empowerment Program of ORBIT. Her family experienced many growth and development. She could give good education for her children through the support of the priests and religious. After joining the SHG she learned to take up leadership, speak to the authorities. For the first time, she took loan from the SHG and bought goats. Thereafter she took another loan and bought a buffalo. She took further loan from SHG for buying cow. These efforts were fruitful as they supported her family expenses.

Her children could get good education and are in good status presently. The first daughter is working in private School as Teacher. Second one is studying B. Com final year. Both boys are studying in PUC 2nd year. At present her family has been turned into a happy abode from the dark nights of banishment.

“Words are insufficient to thank ORBIT for its impact upon my family. We are what we are today because of ORBIT. No words of thanks suffice to repay the help of ORBIT,” says Gopamma.
