Background: Mallamma, from Manna Ekhelli, belongs to a poor family. She became a member of a SHG under ORBIT. She has two children (one girl and one boy) and holds a BPL card. She worked as a labourer.

Problem & Solution: Her husband Mallikarjun was very fearful of letting her step out of the house. She was scared of her husband and mother-in-law. When ORBIT came to form a new SHG in the village, she joined with nine other women. Through many trainings leadership, government facilities, women’s rights, employment guarantee schemes she gained knowledge and confidence.

After joining the group, she began attending bank visits, meeting officials, and participating in village and ward meetings, as well as taluk federation meetings. With family and group support, she was selected as an ASHA worker and has now worked for 14 years. Her children are receiving good education.

ORBIT’s Support: ORBIT staff visited her home, motivated her, and conducted a skills-development programme in her house, which she attended. Since then, she has progressed steadily and is now employed in a company that prepares nutritious food. She earns ₹10,000 per month and the family is living happily.
