Nimbur Village – SHG and Mahasangha Activities

In Nimbur village, four Self-Help Groups were formed through the support of the ORBIT organization. Earlier, the women did not have awareness, understanding, or knowledge.

In Nimbur village, some members of the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have BPL cards and some have agricultural land, but they initially lacked experience in identifying issues in the village. Four SHGs from Nimbur and four from a neighbouring village were brought together to form a Federation, and through several training sessions, discussions and questions, the members were supported to increase their knowledge and learn to identify local problems. One major issue identified was the absence of a gate for the compound wall of the Government Higher Primary School in Nimbur. This issue was discussed in the Federation meeting and a written application was submitted to the Gram Panchayat through the Federation. Although the members visited the Gram Panchayat repeatedly, no solution was given, so the Federation again submitted a second application in 2019 and continued to meet the Panchayat members and follow up with the PDO. During the Vanamahotsava program in the school, the planted saplings were being eaten by goats and sheep, and noticing this, the women again visited the Panchayat. Due to their continuous follow-ups, a gate was finally installed for the school compound in August 2022. The SHGs and Federation formed by ORBIT continue to hold monthly meetings and have been encouraged through various trainings to grow further. They have been guided and supported to identify problems, build networks with authorities, and submit applications to find sustainable solutions. I express my sincere gratitude to the ORBIT organisation and the field staff for their support, awareness building and training.
