In collaboration with KROSS Bangalore, ORBIT has taken up ‘SAMRUDI’ program in the year 2004 covering the areas such as Bidar, Bhalki, Basavakalyan, Chitguppa, Hulsoor and Aurad taluks of Bidar district. This program envisages creating entrepreneurs among rural women to improve the standard of living of their families.
OBJECTIVES
• Empower women to demand their rights and fight against injustice• Increase the number of rural women receiving business counselling
• Provide technical support and promote entrepreneurs among rural women
• Support women financially to raise their monthly individual income
ACTIVITIES
• Entrepreneurship Awareness Program (EAP)• Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP)
• Income Generation Program (IGP)
• Loan distribution
Through this project, for the past 10 years, women and girls from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in rural areas have been supported to overcome poverty. Along with creating awareness, the project provides small loans to help them take up micro-enterprises. They are guided to understand their abilities, market opportunities, and how to select the right enterprise based on local resources. After receiving proper orientation on how to begin and manage the chosen activity, they are given small loans to start.
With these loans, they begin small businesses which not only increase their family income but also improve their overall economic condition. Women who were once left without work have now taken up different types of income-generating activities under this project. More than 2,000 women have availed loans and started ventures such as tea stalls, flour mills, tailoring, grocery shops, dairy farming, bangle trade, cloth trade, and more.
The mothers have also supported their children, who were once idle after schooling, to get involved in small occupations like auto driving, jeep driving, tempo driving, plastic painting, house construction, centring work, carpentry, and other trades. By engaging in such income-generating activities, family members too contribute to improving household income.
Overall, this project has greatly helped women and their families to raise their income, live with dignity, and earn respect in society.
